What’s difference between merchant account and affiliate account?

Hi. What’s difference between merchant account and affiliate account in an affiliate program?

Can you describe each one? Thanks.

On a directory like Clickbank, a merchant account is held by the person who provides the product, like an eBook. And the Affiliate is the person who promotes the sale of that same eBook (or any other product) through Adwords, blogs, articles, etc.

As I understand, a merchant account is setup with a bank by a retailer to enable them to process credit card payments, there are different provides who’s service charge depends on the store’s credit rating. Those who can’t quality can use alternatives, like paypal’s credit card processing service.

An affiliate may be a marketer sending buyers to that retailer, for which a commission is paid into his account kept either by the store or a 3rd party affiliate manager, like Commission Junction.
