A good fire monitor and someone to man it is all that is required. The overwhelming majority of merchant seamen do NOT want to carry firearms.

.50 Cal but getting those on all boats would be very costly and getting one extremely hard not being military

An automatic weapon that fires 7.62 rounds would do the trick-- like a 240B. Good luck getting one, though.

Well, a crew armed with Automatic weapons is pretty scary, provided they have proper training.
