What is the process of becoming a Merchant Marine or Seaman?

Posted on September 1st, 2009 by admin

I am interested in becoming a merchant marine. Please share with me with the protocol if you know. Thanks

If you are interested in the U.S. Merchant Marines, check out the US Merchant Marine Academy at http://www.usmma.edu

As for becoming a Seaman, there are two ways to do that: the U.S. Navy at http://www.navy.com, or the U.S. Coast Guard at http://www.uscg.mil.

Either of them can offer interesting careers with lots of travel and good benefits.

Hope the information helps. Good luck!

There are only about 100 American flagged ships. You need to get a union card (called a "z card") from the Seafarers International Union.

You’ll find the information at this website….

    It’s not easy.
