Hi Wendy,

It all depends on what your business needs to get going properly. PayPal is an excellent solution for a online start up. ClickBank is another good one. If you need to take payments at a cash register, however, you should really look into a Merchant Account.

If you've never been involved in choosing, do some research. MCA's are just arrangements between you, the merchant, and VISA/MC. The providing company charges a fee, Visa charges a fee, and these fees vary according to a lot of different factors. The costs of the equipment is also a factor.

Leases, outright purchases, equipment capabilities, can run into some good money very quickly.

Planning is key. In order to plan effectively, you must conduct some research.

What do you need to provide your services? Who will you provide them to? Who are you competing against? What makes you better; gives you an 'edge'? How are you going to reach your prospects/potential clients? Answering these kinds of questions gives you a basis to begin a business plan.

You can download my free research outline at www.abusinessmentor.com

It should certainly guide you in the right direction.

Good Luck!
References :
Hi. I had the same problem when starting my business. What I did was use paypal until my business volume was high enough to open a merchant account.

If you follow the same steps, then I think you will find this site, http://www.merchantaccountbasics.com really helpful.

Now that I have a merchant account and can deposit payments into it, credit card processing is not as difficult as it may seem.
