There are many factors that go into the pricing and setup of a merchant account. Factors such as, your business type, how old your business is, the products you sell, and your disclosures and warranties.
The cheapest way is to shop around and get quotes from various providers and assess their helpfulness and willingness to get your account approved.
Customer service is another important factor when choosing a merchant account provider. There is nothing more frustrating then having a customer in front of you and not being able to accept their payment. Make sure the provider has 24/7 customer support.

As for the answer below, it is way beyond the scope of this simple question but:
“No company is the cheapest merchant processor.”
Obviously there are processors cheaper than others.
“Leased equipment, Never, Never, Never. Do the math – it is always a rip-off.”
Leased equipment is not for everyone, but is not a rip off. Leasing equipment is a great alternative when the merchant does not want to pay for a terminal upfront. Leased equipment can also be used as a tax write off.
“Some merchant processors offer a simplified statement format with bundled categories, such as "discount", "mid-qualified" and "non-qualified", but only to keep from disclosing individual rates.”
Absolutely FALSE. MOST processors use categories to keep things SIMPLE, not to hide individual rates. Merchants do not want to read a statement with 240+ different rates on it. That only creates confusion. 95% of payments processed will be in the base category, “discount” anyway. But be sure to know your rates for mid-qual and non-qual transactions.
"The simpler the statement format the less a merchant knows about what their true credit card processing costs are or should be."
Merchants are not as clueless as you think they are. They can easily see the effective rate they are paying with this formula:
FEES / VOLUME OF CARD SALES
Way to confuse and mislead a new merchant.
