i am a merchant and i already have a cardnet (from LLOYDS TSB in the UK) to accept card payments. However, i rarely use the machine as sales are normally paid through cheque by our customers. the charges are, i find, very expensive. are there any cheaper options for me available? i know of paypal but does paypal only work over the internet? how about if i want to accept payment over the phone? are there any other cheaper alternatives you know of? thanks
paypal.
I have a business and I need to charge my customers credit card, but don’t have the volume to justify the cost and ongoing exspense to establish a merchant account.Paypal is not an option.
You need a merchant account. VISA, Mastercard, American Express require you to establish one in order to deal with them
What happens when you refund a credit card that does that exist because the first four numbers were inverted with the second four numbers? Does the money come back to me the merchant or do I just have nothing to worry about?
You did this on purpose? or accidentally? umm..no transaction will have occurred. CC companies not bright enough to do the reverse operation. There’s no money coming back to you, and the merchant – bless his heart will get a rejection notice from CC company regarding this transaction. If you got the merchandise, you might be home free.

Capital One mass-canceled a number of their credit cards due to a merchant security compromise. They claim this is necessary to protect their account holders from fraud. However, Capital One has yet to release the merchant’s name. This merchant is a security liability and should be avoided. Does anyone know who this merchant is? Serious replies only, please don’t speculate. Thanks.
Sounds like they have a batch of cards which have a security issue and risk of fraud and so they are protecting themselves against it.
I know that there are companies out there that will give you a cash advance based on your future credit card sales. Well I accept credit cards through paypal only this time and work from my home. Are there companies that will advance me on paypal sales? We hope to be moving to a retail store by year end, but at this time our business is based on the internet. A lot of them can’t work with paypal or won’t work with us b/c we’re home based, but we do bout $600,000 in sales a year about half credit card via paypal.
I am not sure if I should believe you or not. With a $300,000 margin in credit cards you can just about name your credit card company; home-based or not. I started as a home-based computer company and had a credit card machine the first day I opened. If the profit margins are anywhere acceptable, and they’d have to be to open a store, you’d be rolling in dough. So why then do you need an advance? If you’re that cashed straped, a loan of operating capital should be easy to get for you.

is there a way to bill a credit card if im a small repair shop without a merchant account?
No, however you can set up a paypal account. Then your customer can pay you by credit card to your paypal account. They do charge a small fee for receiving funds.
