Why is it expensive to setup a small scale website?

Posted on October 21st, 2009 by admin

I’m reading a book on setting up a business from home, which said that even a small website will cost 1000s of dollars up front, but why? I have estimated that the total cost of my website is about $200 since I have bought a web site template with a shopping cart that I have customised myself, and I’m going to go with inmotion hosting which costs about $8 per month to host an ecommerce site. So the total cost is approximately $500. A merchant ID will take a small fee from every product I sell online and I will probably try and increase my market exposure through Amazon and Ebay. For my first year of trading I have set the goal of selling a 1000 units. So why is it going to be so expensive? What are the hidden costs?

As an online merchant looking to use affiliate marketing networks, do you get to choose your channel?

Posted on October 21st, 2009 by admin

I am researching online affiliate marketing. Say I am looking to sell something online. Let’s also say I want to leverage affiliate marketing networks to advertise my product. As the merchant, is it common to have the ability to choose which type of advertising channel you are marketed to or is it more like a shotgun blast across the internet?

Or is it the other way around… do the affiliates choose what is eventually advertised by their site?

In http://www.FlexOffeers.com, as a merchant yes you can determine who joins your program and ultimately represents you online and what type of advertising will be allowed.

You don’t need 1000s of dollars up front, you might need to switch to a dedicated server when you have like over million of monthly visitors, but there’s no reason to start with a dedicated server.

I don’t recommend InMotion hosting. If you need something for that price I recommend one of these: http://www.hosttell.com/

Powweb has the best offer right now. It’s on a 50% sale – $3.88/month ($46.56/year), and you get a free domain from them.

If I cancel a newly opened merchant account, will I be able to apply with them again and get approved?

Posted on October 20th, 2009 by admin

I recently applied for numerous merchant accounts. I was approved for 3 of them and was left with 3 working merchant accounts. I run one website and only wanted 2. If in furture, I try to apply again, will cancelling the initial account effect any decisions on my second application?

If it was for the same business name, then yes it might. If it’s for a different business name, then no it should not.

1and1 web hosting: e-commerce?

Posted on October 18th, 2009 by admin

Hi . Does anyone here have experience with 1and1 eshop?
I am thinking of purchasing 1and1 hosting plan to create an ecommerce site.

Please provide detailed instructions on how I can go about making this happen.

1. List of things I would need to do to get this site up and running.

2. Technical stuff I would need to know (I have experience in web development, but i have no exp. with ecommerce.). Would I need to do some development work or is the eshop template they provide basically the entire site and you just have to plug in your logo, content, etc. is this relatively straightforward to do?

3. List of other stuff to know like how to set up the payment process. How would I link my bank account (e-merchant account?) to the ecommerce site to accept payment, etc. Not familiar with this process and would appreciate detailed explanation.

Please help.. not just put up a link to some web hosting site and say all the answers are there. Thanks in advance

I don’t have experience with that particular product, but my experience with 1 and 1 on other products is horrendous. Horrible service. High level of down-times. A "technical support" function that consists of saying "we apologize" in different manners of broken English.

Best merchant account for accepting CC payments online?

Posted on October 18th, 2009 by admin

I would like to add online credit card processing to my website. Which bank is the best for this?

The service shouldn’t be too expensive, and the transaction fees should be reasonable.

Thanks.

While PayPal is not a traditional bank, it is a very reliable, easy, and not-too-expensive method for accepting credit card payments online.

A traditional credit card merchant account deducts fees from your checking account each month ($25 or more – usually more) while PayPal deducts a percentage of each sale when the transaction is complete.

After many years of allowing merchant accounts to treat my checking account like a piggybank, I’ve opted for PayPal. Perhaps their program will also benefit your business. The link is below.

Outside of PayPal, the bank where you’ve already established a personal or business account will inform you of merchant account options.

How can I attract more customers to my merchant’s website?

Posted on October 18th, 2009 by admin

Many months have passed since I put up my merchant’s website online. It only registered a handful visitors. How can I attract more customers to my website?

Use direct mail

It is the best way to reach the exact type of people who would buy the products you sell.

Research has shown 98% of consumers bring in their mail the day its delivered ( I know the mailbox is the first place I go when I get home), and that 99% of post cards get read and 73% of envelopes get openend.

SO…How do you turn a captive audience into money?

You do what 90% of busineses Don’t do….and that is…Do your homework! and be prepared !

If you do…your direct mail will be successful for you. …just ask any business who uses direct mail over and over….do you suppose its because they’ve figured out how to make it work? …yup.

There are some great direct mail tips at
